International Students: The International Services and Engagement Office (ISEO) assists students in F-1/J-1 status. Review their new student website for important documentation and requirements, and contact an ISEO advisor with questions specific to your status.
Advising and Course Planning
All incoming students are required to meet with their assigned faculty advisor before enrolling in fall courses. Faculty advisors are assigned during the summer, and students will be notified once they are assigned an advisor.
Incoming students are required to complete a Course Planning Sheet in consultation with their faculty advisor. Once you and your advisor have finalized your course plan, your advisor must sign the form, and it should be submitted to mathgradadvising@ucsd.edu.
Both incoming and continuing students should meet with their advisor each quarter prior to registering for courses. Continuing students are encouraged to use the Course Planning Sheet when mapping out each subsequent quarter to ensure they are meeting program requirements and making consistent progress toward their degree.

Full-Time Enrollment Requirements
-
Students must enroll in 12 units each quarter to maintain full-time status.
-
At least 8 units must be graduate-level math courses taken for a letter grade.
-
The remaining 4 units may be approved upper-division or graduate-level courses in math-related fields. (See the UC San Diego Course Catalog for details.)
-
Students residing in Graduate Housing must remain enrolled in 12 or more units throughout their lease term.
Half-Time Study and Reduced Credit Load
Half-Time Study
Graduate students may request approval for half-time study, allowing enrollment in 6 units per quarter instead of the full-time 12 units. Approval may be granted for reasons such as employment, family responsibilities, medical issues, or during the final quarter. To be approved, students must submit the Graduate Half-Time Study form and be enrolled in 6 units or fewer by 11:59 PM PT on the Friday of Week 2 of the quarter. Approval for half-time study may also allow for reduced tuition if eligible.
Reduced Course Load - International Students Only
F-1 and J-1 students interested in enrolling in fewer than 12 units per quarter must apply for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) through the ISEO Office. RCLs can only be approved for Final Quarter, Medical, Academic, or Filing Fee reasons, and they are approved one quarter at a time. Students must receive RCL authorization from ISEO before dropping below 12 units. An RCL application does not impact tuition reduction; international students must submit their Half-Time Study form after receiving RCL approval if they wish to enroll part-time with reduced tuition.
