Student Employment

We are committed to supporting the academic and professional success of our graduate students. Below is an overview of financial support opportunities available through the department and the university.

Ph.D. Students

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program typically receive financial support for up to five academic years (October – June). This support generally includes tuition and fee coverage, as well as a salary, most often provided through a Teaching Assistant (TA) appointment.

Additional funding may be available through Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) positions and various fellowships, depending on research projects and funding availability. Both TA and GSR roles include a salary and full payment of tuition and fees.

Master’s Students

While departmental financial support is not guaranteed for Master’s students, we encourage students to explore funding opportunities both within and outside the university. The department may have a limited number of TA positions available on a quarter-by-quarter basis, but these are competitive and should not be relied upon as a primary source of funding.

University and External Resources

We strongly recommend reviewing the resources offered through the UC San Diego Graduate Division for additional funding and fellowship opportunities: https://grad.ucsd.edu/financial/

International students may also find helpful information on scholarships and grants through the International Students & Programs Office: https://ispo.ucsd.edu/advising/financial/scholarships-grants.html
