In this talk (intended for general algebraic audience) I will discuss the problem of characterization of definable relations in algebraic structures and give a survey of some classical results in this direction. Also, I will present my joint work with Boris Zilber, where we describe definable relations in the field of reals augmented by a binary predicate for a finite rank multiplicative group of complex numbers contained in the unit circle.
